If you’re in the market for a new set of over-ear noise-cancelling wireless headphones, then we have one clear recommendation: Sony’s WH-1000XM3 cans. Yes, they don’t have the catchiest name in the world – if writing it down is painful, imagine asking for them in store – but they deliver in every way possible, from punch sound to solid noise cancellation. They’re also pricey, retailing for £330 if you pay the full retail price. Fortunately, Amazon is currently selling them for £235 – a clear £95 off the original price tag . A slight caveat: this doesn’t come straight from Amazon’s own stock, but via a third-party seller: Rixil COOL – but it is fulfilled by Amazon, which not only means they qualify for Prime next-day delivery, but they also come from an Amazon fulfilment centre, and qualify for the same customer service and returns system as anything bought on the main site. So with that out of the way, how are they as headphones? Pretty damned exceptional. As Roland wrote in our review – appropriately subtitled “Bose deposed” – they’re “the best wireless ANC headphones around.” “With the WH-1000XM3, Sony has gone straight to the top of the pile with a pair of premium wireless headphones that deliver excellent sound quality, leading noise cancelling and a solid feature set, all housed in a cleverly designed package,” he wrote. There aren’t really any drawbacks, though he did add that they’re not really worth the upgrade if you already own the previous generation, or the ever-popular Bose QC 35ii headphones. For anyone looking for their first set, though, he couldn’t be more glowing: “If you have £330 to spend and you want the best wireless noise-cancelling headphones money can buy, I’d recommend Sony’s WH-1000XM3 in a heartbeat; they’re simply brilliant headphones.” If that was his recommendation when they were £330, you can only imagine how glowing he would have been at £235.
