Call of Duty reveal expected 1st of May

Activision looks set to reveal the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise this week, if leaks from several high profile retail chains are any indication. It has become tradition for the new CoD game to be announced in May, ready for a long promotional hype machine and eventual release in November, and it looks like this year's edition will be no different.

Tesco pulled a listing for Call of Duty: Ghosts from its website over the weekend, but not before speedy Reddit users could capture the image. The name suggests a return to the Modern Warfare universe, rather than a whole new scenario, and a possible return of the fan favourite Ghost character from Modern Warfare 2.

Speculation from YouTube user Drift0r , who claims to have learnt about the game from a "very legitimate" source, suggests that Call of Duty: Ghosts will use present-day weaponry, provide players with extra movements like slides and dashes, peeks around corners and side-to-side rolls, disguise loading times with dynamic load screens and include destructive environments in the single player campaign.

Meanwhile, Employees of American games retailer GameStop have posted photos to twitter and Reddit showing point of sale posters and displays teasing the new game. IGN reported that display blueprints are being shipped to GameStop stores today, ready to be put on shop floors on the 1st of May alongside an official reveal. The images only show placeholders for box art and promotional assets, so don't help confirm the earlier Tesco leak.

Currently, there's no indication which consoles the game will be released on - its almost certainly scheduled to launch on Xbox 369 and PS3, but we'll have to wait until the official announcement to see whether a PS4 version is in the works, and again until the 21st of May to learn whether Microsoft has anything to announce for its next Xbox.

Activision has so far refused to comment on the leaks, but we shouldn't have long to wait to verify their authenticity - the reveal is expected on Wednesday.
